This play depicts the struggle between the oppressor and the oppressed. The elderly gardener Bancharam loves his garden deeply, while the landlord Naukuri Dutt tries to seize it by force. All of the landlord’s attempts fail, and he ultimately meets his death.
Even after his death, the landlord’s ghost continues to haunt the old gardener. Meanwhile, small-town characters—the thief, the barber, and the moneylender, seek to keep Bancharam alive for their own selfish purposes, while the landlord constantly plots his destruction.
The original play is by Bengali writer Manoj Mitra. It is full of humor and entertainment, portraying a whimsical world of ghosts, superstitions, and eccentric characters, while also weaving in the serious themes of truth and falsehood, exploitation, and struggle.
In the end, the landlord dies, and Bancharam’s household welcomes the hope of a new generation, a ray of optimism for the oppressed.
